If one is owe a car - the issue would be either spend money on car loan and get a new car which related to lower in maintenance cost. And the reverse happens when you are using old car - no car loan but higher maintenance cost.

Nonetheless the consistent maintenance - regular services will translate to lower maintenance cost in the long run. 

For public transportation, it is best to work around the various public transportation available, the cost and time of using it and whether it is a more cost saving compared to driving your own car. Public transport does not necessarily means cheap and fast. 

For long journeys, work out the best route and time before you start the journey.
